History

St Gregory’s is served today by the Benedictine monks of Douai Abbey, located in Berkshire.

The English Benedictine Congregation has provided parish priests for Stratford-upon-Avon continuously since the church was completed in 1866 and for many years before that – when England was missionary territory. The monks, living as chaplains to the Smythe family at Wootton Hall, Wootton Wawen, some 6 miles from Stratford, looked after the spiritual needs of the parish, often in conditions of difficulty and danger.

The church replaced the Chapel of Our Lady of La Salette, which was located in Rother Street.

The church has many visitors from around the world each year and we are always pleased to welcome them to our masses.

Groups supporting the Parish Worship are:

Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA): Are you a Catholic ?  If not would you like to know more ?  Sessions for all those who wish to find out more about the Catholic faith will be running in 2008 in the Priory.  Also if you are a Catholic who has been out of touch and would like to reconnect, you are welcome to attend.  A team of Catechists, together with the Parish Priest, will lead the sessions.  For more information please contact Fr Austin on 01789 292439.

Music/Liturgy Groups: Aims to bring the musical talents of the Parish together to reflect on the Word of God and provide appropriate music and liturgy for all services. The 9.30am Sunday Service, at Our Lady Peace in Shottery, has a family feel with a children’s liturgy group and more modern musical settings. The 11.15am Mass is a High Mass where congregational participation in the singing of the music (both modern and traditional) plays a very important part.

Catechists Team: Support our Parish Priest in providing instruction for children who do not attend catholic schools and others in the community who wish to join the Church.

Readers/Eucharistic Ministers: Actively participate in the Mass, assisting our Parish Priest with the Mass and also take Communion to the sick.

Altar Servers: Meet every third Wednesday of the month for training and social activities. Both boys and girls are welcome to serve on the altar.

Schools

St Gregory’s Catholic Primary School is voluntary aided and owned by the Archdiocese of Birmingham. It is a one form entry primary school, providing education for the catholic children of Stratford-upon-Avon and the surrounding villages. The school is situated in Avenue Road, close to the church.

There are seven classrooms, an assembly/dining hall, a Design technology room, computer suite, music room, TV room and heated indoor swimming pool. The enclosed grounds provide an ideal venue for sporting activities, as well as a rich, tranquil environment for the children to play in.

The school feeds all secondary schools in the area, including our two Catholic ones: St. Benedicts in Alcester and Trinity in Leamington Spa.

Little Greg's Pre School opened in September 2008.  For more information please click here, or to find out about availability or to book a place please contact 01789 290198.
